What it does
Difengpi bark eases chronic joint and lower back pain that lingers in damp weather. In TCM, it relieves wind-damp impediment, the pattern behind achy joints, and treats lower back muscle strain. The slightly pungent, astringent profile both moves stuck qi and pulls inflamed tissue tight. Slightly toxic, so doses stay low. Also used as a centipede-bite poultice.
How to take it
Decoct 6–9g of dried difengpi bark in water for 25 minutes. Drink 1 cup, 1–2x daily during chronic joint or back pain flares. Short-term only.

Where it comes from
Difengpi bark comes from Illicium difengpi, a small evergreen native to Guangxi and Yunnan provinces in southern China. The plant is closely related to star anise, but the bark, not the seedpod, is the medicinal part. Difengpi has remained a regional medicinal, less prominent than its relative, and rarely used outside south China. Local folk use includes a topical poultice for centipede bites, along with internal use for chronic joint and back pain.
