What it does
Isatis root fights colds, flu, and sore throats fast when you feel them coming on hard. In TCM, it clears toxic heat, the pattern behind acute fevers, swollen glands, and inflamed throats. It's also used for mumps, viral encephalitis, and chronic hepatitis. One systematic review tracks its broad antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects.
How to take it
Steep an instant Ban Lan Gen tea packet (commonly available) in hot water. Or decoct 9–15g of dried sliced root for 25 minutes. Drink 1–2 cups during acute illness.
Try a Ban Lan Gen instant tea packet at the first sign of a sore throat

Where it comes from
Isatis (Isatis indigotica) is the same plant historically used to make indigo dye. The dried root is one of the best-selling TCM herbs in China, sold in instant-tea packets at pharmacies and convenience stores. Demand spiked during the 2003 SARS outbreak, when isatis was widely used as a complementary support. Modern lab studies have explored its activity against influenza and other respiratory viruses, with one systematic review summarizing the evidence.
