What it does
Nux vomica is reserved for extreme cases: severe pain, numbness, and paralysis that nothing else can reach. It contains strychnine, making it one of the most dangerous substances in TCM. Practitioners use it only when gentler approaches have failed, for conditions like hemiplegia and rheumatoid arthritis. The therapeutic window is extremely narrow, and even tiny overdoses can be fatal.
How to take it
Only used in micro-doses within practitioner-prescribed formulas after strict processing. Never handle or prepare raw nux vomica seeds.
This is strictly practitioner-only. Do not attempt to obtain or use
Safety
- Extremely toxic, contains strychnine. Fatal in improper doses
- Absolutely never self-prescribe. Practitioner-only with strict dosing protocols
- Never use during pregnancy, nursing, or in children
- Overdose causes convulsions and respiratory failure
- Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication
Where it comes from
Nux vomica comes from the Strychnos tree and contains strychnine, one of the most famous poisons in history. In TCM, it's been used cautiously for centuries for conditions where severe pain and paralysis resist all other treatment. The processing involves sand-frying or oil-frying the seeds to reduce toxicity. Even after processing, the therapeutic window is extremely narrow. It represents TCM's principle that the most dangerous substances, used precisely, can treat what nothing gentle can.
