Practitioner herb for severe joint pain

Properties

WarmingWarming botanicalPungent, Bitter

What it does

Prepared Cao Wu treats severe rheumatoid arthritis, deep cold-pattern bone pain, and abdominal colic from cold. In TCM, it warms the channels and powerfully dispels wind-damp. Even after vinegar processing, residual aconitine alkaloids retain serious cardiac toxicity. Often paired with prepared Chuan Wu in joint formulas.

How to take it

Capsule

Used only in practitioner formulas at 3–9g of vinegar-processed root, decocted for at least 1–2 hours. Never use raw form. Strictly short-term.

Avoid self-use. Modern alternatives are safer for joint pain

Safety

  • Toxic even after processing. Practitioner-only with strict dosing
  • Strictly avoid during pregnancy
  • Cardiac toxicity possible at standard doses; never exceed 9g
  • Skip with heart disease or arrhythmia history
  • Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication

Where it comes from

Kusnezoff monkshood (Aconitum kusnezoffii) is the wild Asian cousin of common monkshood. The raw kusnezoff root (Cǎo Wū) is severely toxic; the processed form (Zhì Cǎo Wū) covered here is used in modern Chinese pharmacopoeia for joint pain. Both monkshood species require careful prolonged boiling to reduce aconitine. The two prepared forms are nearly always used together in formulas.
