American Ginseng
西洋参 · Xī Yáng Shēn
Boosts your energy without making you wired
What it does
American ginseng helps when you're running on empty but still feel wired. In TCM, it replenishes your qi, your body's baseline energy, while also cooling you down. That makes it different from regular ginseng, which is warming and stimulating. American ginseng is the one practitioners traditionally reach for when you're burned out: tired but restless, dry throat, trouble winding down.
How to take it
Steep 3–6g of sliced American ginseng root in hot water for 10–15 minutes. Drink 1–2 cups daily. The slices can be re-steeped 2–3 times.
Start with a small handful of pre-sliced root and steep as an afternoon tea
Safety
- Gentler than Asian ginseng, but still avoid during acute illness with fever
- May lower blood sugar. Monitor closely if you have diabetes
- Skip if you take blood thinners like warfarin
- Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication
Where it comes from
American ginseng grows wild in the forests of eastern North America, and its trade with China dates back to the early 1700s. French Jesuit missionaries near Montreal first identified it as a relative of Asian ginseng around 1716. By the late 1800s, wild American ginseng was being exported to China by the ton. In TCM, it's prized precisely for being different from Asian ginseng, cooler and gentler, ideal for people who need energy without extra heat.
