What it does
Deer antler rebuilds your body's warming, activating energy when it's depleted. In TCM, that depletion shows up as cold limbs, low back pain, weak knees, and sluggish circulation. Deer antler is one of the most prized yang tonics. The hard antler (Lù Jiǎo) is the affordable form, distinct from velvet (Lù Róng). It also disperses post-injury swellings and supports nursing mothers with low milk.
How to take it
Powdered deer antler is typically dosed at 1–3g daily, taken with warm water or wine. Tablets and capsules are most convenient. Best as a long-term tonic, not acute use.
Try a small daily dose during winter to support cold-pattern fatigue
Safety
- Animal-derived. Skip if you avoid animal products
- Strongly warming. Avoid in hot patterns, fever, or yin-deficiency heat
- Skip during pregnancy
- Source matters. Wild deer antler can carry parasites or contaminants
- Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication
Where it comes from
Deer antler has been a TCM cornerstone for over 2,000 years. Two forms exist: soft young velvet antler (Lù Róng), the more expensive form, and the hardened mature antler (Lù Jiǎo) used here. Antlers are harvested annually from farmed deer and regrow naturally, making them one of the more sustainable animal-derived TCM products. Korean ginseng-and-antler tonics are among the highest-priced products in East Asian markets.
