What it does
Deer antler gelatin is for depletion that has gone deep, the kind where you feel worn to the bone and heal slowly. In TCM it rebuilds essence and blood, essence being the body's inherited store of vitality, and practitioners use it for exhaustion with persistent cold, dizziness, and heavy or prolonged bleeding. It also helps slow bleeding directly. It is the milder, cheaper cousin of deer velvet.
Safety
- This is an animal product, made by boiling down deer antler. It is not vegan or vegetarian.
- Classical sources are firm: no deer antler product for heat from yin depletion, with night sweats and warm palms.
- Described as cloying: rich enough to sit on the digestion. If yours is fragile, pair it with something that moves food.
- The AHPA handbook covers plants only, so there is no independent safety or interaction rating for this one.
- Sourcing quality varies and counterfeits are common, another reason to get it through a practitioner.
- No information exists on its safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
How to take it
It comes as hard dried squares that must be melted, never boiled with the other herbs. Dissolve 6–12g in a little hot rice wine or hot water, then stir into a strained decoction or drink alone.
This is a practitioner-prescribed ingredient rather than a herb to start on your own
Where it comes from
Deer antler gelatin is documented in the classical materia medica alongside deer velvet, antler, and degelatinated antler powder, four distinct medicinals from the same animal. Antler is turned into glue between late autumn and early spring: soaked, stewed three times over several days, then reduced to a paste, finished with yellow rice wine and a little oil, and left to congeal into squares that dry for up to two months. Classically it's the form used in Restore the Right Kidney Pill.
