What it does

Pinellia is traditionally used when you feel congested, nauseous, or foggy-headed. In TCM, these come from dampness, a heavy buildup of excess moisture in your body. Pinellia dries that out and redirects your energy downward, which is why it's especially good for nausea. Nausea in TCM happens when energy surges up instead of down. It's one of TCM's most important botanicals for congestion.

How to take it

Capsule

This one needs a practitioner. Processed Pinellia is used in herbal formulas at 3–9g per dose, often paired with ginger to reduce side effects.

Ask a TCM practitioner about Pinellia formulas. Don't source this one yourself

Safety

  • Important: pinellia is toxic when raw. Only use processed forms from a trusted source
  • Not safe during pregnancy. Classified as a prohibited herb in TCM during pregnancy
  • Can irritate the throat if not properly prepared. Never use unprocessed pinellia
  • This botanical needs practitioner guidance. Not one for self-prescribing
  • Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication

Where it comes from

Pinellia's Chinese name means 'half summer' (Bàn Xià), because it's traditionally harvested around the summer solstice. It appears in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng, one of TCM's foundational texts from roughly 200 CE. Zhāng Zhòng-Jǐng featured it in his 2nd-century formulas, including Xiǎo Bàn Xià Tāng (Minor Pinellia Decoction), a nausea remedy with ginger still prescribed today. Raw pinellia is toxic, so it has always required careful processing.
