Propolis
蜂胶 · Fēng Jiāo
Heals wounds, calms inflammation, and protects skin
What it does
Propolis helps heal wounds, ulcers, and irritated skin. In TCM, it's used to calm inflammation, relieve pain, and help damaged tissue regenerate. Bees make propolis from tree resin to protect their hive from bacteria and invaders, and it works similarly for your body: sealing, protecting, and speeding up healing. With 27 clinical trials, it's one of the most studied bee products.
How to take it
Take propolis tincture drops (10–20 drops) in water 2–3 times daily, or apply directly to minor cuts and cold sores. Also available as throat spray.
Try a propolis throat spray at the first sign of a sore throat
Safety
- Can cause allergic reactions in people allergic to bee products or pollen
- Test a small amount first if you've never used bee products before
- Generally well tolerated but can irritate the mouth in concentrated forms
- Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication
Where it comes from
Bees create propolis from tree resin to protect their hives from bacteria, fungi, and invaders. The name comes from Greek 'pro' (before) and 'polis' (city), meaning 'defense of the city.' In TCM, it's classified as a qi-reinforcing medicinal for its restorative properties. Hippocrates used it in ancient Greece for wound healing. Today, with 13 systematic reviews covering oral health, wound care, and immune support, propolis has earned serious scientific attention as a natural antimicrobial.
