What it does

Schisandra steadies your energy, sleep, and stress all at once. In TCM, it's an astringent that locks in vital essences when they leak out as night sweats, restless sleep, or low-level anxiety. It also calms the spirit, which TCM links to insomnia and palpitations. Its name 'five-flavor berry' reflects all five tastes in one fruit, touching multiple body systems at once.

How to take it

Drink

Steep 3–6g of dried schisandra berries in hot water for 10 minutes. Drink 1–2 cups daily. The berries can be re-steeped 2–3 times before losing flavor.

Try schisandra tea as an afternoon adaptogen instead of coffee

Safety

  • Generally well tolerated, but can cause mild stomach upset or heartburn
  • Skip during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to limited safety data
  • May affect liver enzymes and how your body processes some medications
  • Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication

Where it comes from

Schisandra is one of the few botanicals that hits all five TCM tastes at once: sour, sweet, bitter, salty, and pungent. That uniqueness made it legendary, and classical texts considered it suitable for tonifying every major organ system. It's been used in TCM since at least the Han Dynasty, around 200 BCE. Modern Russian and Chinese researchers have studied it as an adaptogen, a botanical that helps your body resist stress.
