Honeysuckle & Forsythia

銀翹散 · yín qiào sǎn

The classical TCM formula for catching a wind-heat cold early. Take at the first sign of sore throat and fever.

What it's for

This is the formula to reach for in the first 24 to 48 hours of a cold or flu when the main signs are sore throat, mild fever, slight chills, and thirst. TCM calls that pattern wind-heat, and honeysuckle and forsythia are the lead herbs that clear it. The other herbs gently push the pathogen out through the surface. Taken late in an illness, the formula loses most of its usefulness.

This formula is for you if…

  1. Sore throat with a fever starting

burning throat, body feels hot more than cold

  2. First day or two of a cold that's running hot

mild chills that turn into feeling overheated, thirsty

  3. Dry cough and throbbing head

wanting cold drinks, headache that pounds

Best fit if at least 2 of these sound like you. Use early, within the first day or two of symptoms.

You might also notice

  • Red tip on your tongue
  • Light sweating once heat sets in
  • Slight sensitivity to wind in the first hours

Not your match if…

  • You feel cold to the bone with chills, body aches, and clear runny nose
  • Your cold has settled in deep, past the early stage
  • You have heavy, damp symptoms like a greasy tongue coating

How to take it

Honeysuckle & Forsythia is sold ready-made as Yin Chiao Chieh Tu Pien (銀翹解毒片).

Standard dose: 4 tablets, 3 times a day.

We're working on a Field Guide–recommended source for this formula. In the meantime, look for Plum Flower brand at a TCM pharmacy or specialty retailer.

Talk to a qualified TCM practitioner before taking this regularly, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or take medication.

Safety

  • Designed for the wind-heat pattern, the kind of cold that starts with sore throat and feeling hot. It's not the right pick for the wind-cold pattern that starts with strong chills, body aches, and clear runny nose.
  • Best in the first day or two of symptoms. Once the illness has settled in deeper, a different strategy is needed.
  • Talk to a qualified TCM practitioner before using this regularly, especially if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, or take medication.
