Xanthium Powder

蒼耳子散 · cāng ěr zǐ sǎn

The classical formula for chronic sinus congestion with thick, foul-smelling discharge.

What it's for

For nasal congestion that has long since stopped being a simple cold, where the discharge has become thick, discolored, or foul-smelling and the forehead feels pressure all the time. In TCM this is called deep-source nasal congestion, a condition where wind pathogens remain lodged after an unresolved cold and block the Lung's external orifice, the nose. Four simple herbs, led by xanthium fruit, disperse that wind, dry the dampness behind the blockage, and open the passages back up.

Signs this formula is a fit

At least 2 of the 3 main signs below should sound like you. Thick or discolored discharge is the distinguishing signal.

Main signs

  • Nose is congested with thick, discolored mucus

discharge is turbid, purulent, or has a foul smell, not thin and clear

  • Frontal pressure or headache

dull ache at the forehead or behind the eyes, worsens with sinus pressure

  • Dizziness or head pressure linked to the congestion

foggy, pressured head feeling that moves with the sinus symptoms

Extra signs

  • Nasal obstruction that lingers after an unresolved cold
  • Normal or thin, white to slightly greasy tongue coating

Signs it isn't

  • You have a fresh, acute cold with fever and clear watery discharge; this formula is for the chronic state after the cold lingers
  • Your nasal discharge is thin and clear with no congestion
  • Your symptoms are from Liver and Gallbladder fire: one-sided blockage with yellow discharge and a bitter taste in the mouth

What's in it

Safety

  • Built for deep-source congestion with thick, discolored discharge. Not for a fresh cold with clear runny nose.
  • Avoid during pregnancy. Magnolia flower bud is classified as not for use in pregnancy.
  • Xanthium fruit is toxic, not mildly so. Overdose risks liver and kidney failure. Never exceed the label dose.
  • Keep away from children. A fatal xanthium poisoning is documented in a young child.
  • Short courses only. Stop once the congestion clears, since these acrid herbs injure qi over time.
  • Not for congestion from qi deficiency, or where there is yin-deficiency fire or blood deficiency with fire.
