What it does
Cornelian cherry rebuilds you when fatigue, weak knees, tinnitus, or frequent urination signal you're running on empty. In TCM, those symptoms point to depleted kidneys, your body's deep reserve for energy, fertility, and willpower. Cornelian cherry replenishes that reserve. Sour and astringent, it also helps your body hold onto vital substances.
How to take it
Steep 6–12g of dried cornelian cherry fruit in hot water for 10 minutes. Drink 1–2 cups daily as a long-term tonic. Often combined with rehmannia.
Try cornelian cherry tea daily during periods of long-term fatigue
Eat fresh or dried (pitted). Steep in tea, add to compotes, or use in jam. Pairs well with apples and pears.
Try a small handful of dried cornelian cherries as a tart afternoon snack
Safety
- Generally well tolerated as a tonic
- Skip if you have urinary blockage or active bladder infection
- Strongly astringent. Avoid with constipation or heavy or dry stools
- Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication
Where it comes from
Cornelian cherry has been a TCM essential for over 2,000 years. The fruit grows on small trees across China, Korea, and Eastern Europe. In TCM, it's a key ingredient in the famous formula Liù Wèi Dì Huáng Wán (six-flavor rehmannia pill), which is one of the most-prescribed traditional formulas worldwide for kidney yin deficiency. The pitted, dried fruit has a sweet-sour-astringent taste that's distinctive and easy to spot in herbal pharmacies.
