Astragalus
黄芪 · Huáng Qí
Boosts qi when you're running on empty
What it does
Astragalus rebuilds you when low energy, frequent colds, and lingering fatigue stack up. In TCM, it reinforces qi and supports the spleen, the system that converts food into usable energy. It also strengthens 'defensive qi,' the body's first-line shield. Research tracks it for kidney disease, cancer-related fatigue, and immunity.
How to take it
Simmer 9–30g of dried sliced astragalus root in 4 cups water for 30–45 minutes. Drink 1–2 cups daily as a long-term tonic. Add to soups with chicken or pork ribs.
Add astragalus slices to a weekly chicken broth for steady immune support
Stir 1–2g of astragalus powder into warm water, smoothies, or oatmeal. Best taken in the morning. Daily use is fine for most people.
Add a small scoop to your morning smoothie for a daily energy base
Take a standardized astragalus capsule (typically 500–1000mg) once or twice daily, with food. Look for products that list astragaloside content.
Try a standardized capsule daily during cold and flu season
Safety

Where it comes from
Astragalus has been a TCM cornerstone for over 2,000 years, mentioned in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng. The root grows wild across northern China, Mongolia, and Korea. It's the lead herb in foundational formulas like Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang for chronic fatigue and prolapse. Eight modern systematic reviews have tracked its effects on diabetic kidney disease, IgA nephropathy, COPD, gastric cancer adjunct therapy, and cancer-related fatigue.
