Chinese Yam
山药 · Shān Yào
Strengthens digestion and rebuilds steady energy
What it does
Chinese yam strengthens digestion when your appetite is low or you have chronic loose stools, generates fluids when your throat is dry, and supports the kidneys for slow-burn fatigue and frequent urination. In TCM, the sweet neutral profile makes it gentle and suitable for daily use. It's a key ingredient in classic formulas like Liu Wei Di Huang Wan and the Si Shen porridge.
How to take it
Slice 100–200g fresh Chinese yam, simmer with pork ribs or chicken for 1–2 hours. Or use 9–30g dried yam in soups. Eat 2–3 times per week as a tonic.
Try Chinese yam and pork rib soup once a week
Safety
- Very safe as food. Daily use is generally fine
- Raw yam mucilage can cause skin itching. Wear gloves when peeling raw
- May lower blood sugar. Monitor if you have diabetes
- Avoid in cases of acute fever or with stuck phlegm
- Talk to your doctor before starting medicinal use, especially if you take medication
Where it comes from
Chinese yam (Dioscorea opposita) has been a Chinese staple for over 2,000 years, treated equally as food and medicine. The name Shān Yào means 'mountain medicine.' In TCM, it's one of the most widely used qi-tonifying herbs and appears in classical formulas like Liu Wei Di Huang Wan for kidney support and the Si Shen porridge mix for digestion. Available fresh, dried, or pre-cooked in most Asian grocery stores.
