Calms a busy mind and sharpens recall

Properties

WarmingWarming botanicalBitter, Pungent

What it does

Polygala calms an anxious mind, supports memory, and quiets the restless sleep that comes with overthinking. In TCM, it strengthens the heart-kidney connection, the pattern behind insomnia plus forgetfulness. It also resolves stuck phlegm in the chest and helps coughs with thick mucus. The Chinese name Yuǎn Zhì means 'far-reaching aspiration,' a nod to its mind-clearing reputation.

How to take it

DrinkCapsule

Decoct 3–9g of dried polygala root in 4 cups water for 25 minutes. Drink 1 cup, 1–2x daily. Often paired with sour jujube seed and biota seed in sleep formulas.

Try a polygala and sour jujube tea before bed during overthinking spells

Take a standardized polygala or memory-formula capsule (typically 200–500mg) once or twice daily. Often combined with bacopa or lion's mane in modern blends.

Try a polygala-based focus-and-sleep formula daily during high-stress weeks

Safety

  • Mild stomach irritation possible at high doses. Take with food
  • Skip during pregnancy. Strong uterine effect documented
  • Skip with stomach ulcers or gastritis
  • Don't combine with sedatives or alcohol
  • Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication

Where it comes from

Polygala tenuifolia has been a TCM cognitive tonic for over 2,000 years, mentioned in the Shén Nóng Běn Cǎo Jīng. The Chinese name Yuǎn Zhì means 'far-reaching aspiration,' reflecting its classical use for memory and sustained focus. It's the lead herb in classical formulas like Ding Zhi Wan (Stabilize the Will Pill) and pairs with sour jujube seed in many sleep recipes. Modern Korean research has explored polygalasaponin compounds for cognitive function in lab studies.
