Eight Treasure
八珍湯 · bā zhēn tāng
The classic TCM double-tonic for when your energy and blood are both running low at the same time.
What it's for
Four Gentlemen builds qi, the energy that moves through your body, and Four Substances nourishes blood. Eight Treasure combines both into one formula for the overlap where both are depleted. You feel it as the particular kind of washed-out fatigue where you're pale, a little dizzy, easily winded, and your heart flutters for no real reason. In TCM, this pattern shows up often after long illness, heavy blood loss, or years of running on empty.
Signs this formula is a fit
At least 2 of the 3 main signs below should sound like you. If only one does, a more focused formula might fit better.
Main signs
Tired all the time, no matter how much you rest
the fatigue feels like running on empty, not just a rough week
Pale, dull complexion that won't perk up
skin looks washed out or sallow and lacks color even when you're not sick
Heart flutters or palpitations that come and go
a noticeable heartbeat without obvious cause, often worse when tired
Extra signs
- Low appetite and little interest in food
- Short of breath from mild effort
- Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing
- Pale tongue with a thin white coating
- Thin, frail pulse
Signs it isn't
- You have a thick, greasy tongue coating or strong forceful pulse
- Your fatigue comes with heat, night sweats, or a red complexion
- You're dealing with an active cold, flu, or infection
- Your main issue is digestive bloating or loose stools without fatigue

Safety
- For combined qi and blood depletion. Wrong choice for excess: forceful pulse, thick greasy tongue coat, or infection.
- The rich, nourishing herbs can be hard on weak digestion. Bloating or loose stools mean this isn't your formula.
- Dong quai and chuanxiong are traditionally avoided during pregnancy.
- Dong quai may interact with anticoagulants and increase bleeding risk. Talk to a clinician if you take blood thinners.
