What it does
White peony eases muscle cramps, painful periods, tension headaches, and rib-side tightness from stress. In TCM, it nourishes blood and softens a 'tight liver,' the pattern behind irritability and physical clenching. It pairs with Dang Gui in Si Wu Tang for blood, and with licorice in Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang for spasms. Two reviews track its dysmenorrhea uses.
How to take it
Decoct 6–15g of dried white peony root in 4 cups water for 30 minutes. Drink 1 cup, 1–2x daily. Common in Si Wu Tang or Xiao Yao San formulas with other herbs.
Try a Xiao Yao San formula during PMS with irritability and cramps
Take a standardized white peony or Xiao Yao San capsule (typically 500–1000mg) once or twice daily with food.
Try a daily capsule during high-stress weeks for tension relief
Safety
- Generally well tolerated
- May lower blood pressure. Monitor if you take antihypertensives
- Skip with chronic diarrhea or cold-pattern digestion
- Skip during pregnancy without practitioner guidance
- Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication
Where it comes from
White peony (Paeonia lactiflora) is the cultivated peony grown for its medicinal root, distinguished from red peony (Chi Shao) which moves blood more aggressively. White peony nourishes and softens. The root is harvested after 3–5 years of growth, then peeled and boiled. It's the lead herb in two famous formulas: Si Wu Tang for blood deficiency and Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang (with licorice) for spasms and cramping pain. Two reviews track dysmenorrhea outcomes.
