What it does

Chinese thorowax eases a wired-but-stuck feeling: irritability, chest tightness, and the muggy edge of low-grade fever. In TCM, this is called liver qi depression, where your flow has jammed under stress. Thorowax frees that flow. It's the lead herb in Xiao Yao San, the classic formula for stress and PMS. Four reviews track its effects on mood, hepatitis, and metabolic conditions.

How to take it

Drink

Decoct 3–10g of dried thorowax root in water for 20 minutes. Drink 1 cup, 1–2x daily during stress flares. Most effective in formula, not solo.

Try a Xiao Yao San formula during high-stress periods or PMS

Safety

  • Generally well tolerated. Prolonged high doses can stress the liver
  • Skip with severe yin deficiency or during heavy bleeding patterns
  • Skip during pregnancy unless practitioner-directed
  • Can interact with sedatives and anticonvulsants
  • Talk to your doctor before starting, especially if you take medication

Where it comes from

Chinese thorowax is one of the most-prescribed botanicals in TCM history. It's the lead herb in Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer), one of the most-used formulas globally for stress, PMS, and irritability. The plant's Chinese name Chái Hú means 'firewood, beard,' a description of its dry, wispy upper roots. Modern reviews have explored its saikosaponins for liver protection, antiviral activity, and antidepressant effects, with promising results across hepatitis and mood disorders.
