Modified Free & Easy Wanderer

加味逍遙散 · jiā wèi xiāo yáo sǎn

The variant of Free and Easy Wanderer for when liver tension has tipped into irritability and heat.

What it's for

This is the version of Free and Easy Wanderer prescribed when stress and frustration have built up long enough to create internal heat alongside the stagnation. You feel it as mood swings or a short fuse, warmth that flushes through your face or upper body, and hormonal symptoms like breast tenderness before your period. In TCM, practitioners reach for it when liver qi, the energy that moves through your body, has been constrained long enough to transform into what they call liver fire.

Signs this formula is a fit

At least 2 of the 3 main signs below should sound like you. If only one does, a more focused formula might fit better.

Main signs

  • Short-tempered and quick to flare, especially before your period

frustrated by small things, mood can shift fast

  • Waves of heat through your face or upper body

not a fever, more like flushes that come on when you're stressed or around your cycle

  • Breast tenderness in the week before your period

tender, swollen, or achey breasts that ease once your period starts

Extra signs

  • Dry mouth or red eyes
  • Heart fluttering or palpitations when stressed
  • Lower abdominal fullness or pressure
  • Heavy or irregular menstrual flow
  • Restless sleep with heat sensations

Signs it isn't

  • You run cold and feel better with warmth and rest
  • Your main issue is low energy or fatigue without irritability
  • You have no premenstrual mood or heat symptoms
  • Your stress shows up as anxiety and worry rather than frustration

What's in it

Safety

  • Liver constraint with heat. Stronger than plain Free and Easy Wanderer; if you run cold or lack heat signs, use that.
  • Not appropriate during pregnancy. Dong quai and bupleurum (Chinese thorowax) are traditionally avoided in pregnancy.
  • Dong quai may interact with anticoagulants. Talk to a clinician if you take blood thinners.
